Payments Trivia – What is E-Rupi

E-Rupi is a cashless and contactless digital payments system. The Indian Government launched it on 3rd August 2021. The main purpose of this system is to make sure government benefits reach the citizens without any leak.

It is an electronic voucher that will be provided to recipients in the form of a QR code and SMS-string-based voucher, allowing payments to be paid straight to their bank account. Anyone with a working phone (no internet connection necessary) can access the e-voucher.

How is E-Rupi sent?

Through their partner banks, any government agency or corporates can generate e-RUPI vouchers.

A beneficiary must present the merchant the QR code or SMS message, which the merchant will scan. Once scanned, they will send a verification code to the beneficiary’s phone number. The latter must share the received code with the merchant and complete the payment. It will act as a prepaid e-voucher (QR code or SMS string-based) for us to make payments hassle-free. With E-Rupi, we will not need a credit card, debit card or any other service to make such transactions.

Benefits of E-Rupi:

Here are few benefits that makes E-Rupi a fine Payment Option.

  • It simplifies our payment process by leaps and bounds – People without any bank account can easily make payment using E-voucher
  • There will no physical interference. It is leak proof!
  • Prepaid vouchers mean just Tap and Pay.
  • We will no longer need cards, net banking, mobile banking for etc.

How is it different from digital currencies?

While the implementation of e-RUPI is the first step toward India having a digital currency, it is more of a social service voucher system, ensuring that benefits are delivered to eligible recipients without any inconsistencies or delays.

This contrasts with cryptocurrencies, which allow you to purchase products and services as well as sell them for profit.

Most notably, the government governs E-Rupi. People can use the government-paid prepaid voucher for welfare assistance, at least in the beginning.

Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) declared in January this year that it is studying the need for a central bank digital currency in India as a strategy to improve access to financial services.
